Can You Use Nespresso Pods In Keurig?

Do you know if you can use Nespresso pods in a Keurig? The machines are pretty similar, but because of the size and shape of the coffee pods, they are not actually compatible (spoiler).

However, that doesn’t mean that you cannot enjoy a Nespresso in a Keurig…there is a way to work around the size and shape difference.

Can You Use A Nespresso Pod In A Keurig?

So, the short answer is no, but the long answer is yes! It doesn’t make sense…but it will.

You can work around the pod difference by putting the ground coffee in the Nespresso capsule into a reusable K-cup. They’re designed for this purpose. Then, put the capsule into your Keurig machine.

Sounds easy enough, right? Maybe. It all depends on how familiar you are with the process.

What Is A K-Cup?

A K-Cup is a reusable plastic container that holds the coffee for drinks. They used to be patented by Keurig, but no longer are. That means that there are now many companies that have K-cups available, or something very similar to it.

The K-cup from Keurig is a little plastic cup that resembles a pod, and it has a lid made from aluminum foil. Inside, the coffee grounds are stored for use. The coffee is tightly sealed, then pierced by a needle by the machine when the time comes to use it.

Nespresso pods, however, are very different from K-cups. They have bodies made from aluminum foil, and a top that is perforated. The whole pod shape is totally different in the way that they have a rounded bottom and are smaller and more compact.

Unfortunately, if you tried using a K-cup in a Nespresso, it wouldn’t even fit. A Nespresso pod in the Keurig would either result in the pod being destroyed, or the Keurig machine itself being destroyed. Neither of which you want to happen.

Can You Swap Pods For These Machines?

No. You cannot use a Nespresso pod in a Keurig, and you can’t use a Keurig pod in a Nespresso machine. As nice as that would be, it just doesn’t work for business. The machines have vastly different internal mechanics, and are not compatible – except if you use a K-cup for a Keurig.

Why Would You Want To Use A Nespresso Pod In A Keurig?

Maybe you love your Nespresso drinks. It’s possible that your Nespresso machine finally decided to kick the bucket, and now you have a whole load of pods and no machine to put them in.

Or maybe you’ve got some old K-cups lying around that you never knew what to do with. Either way, you can get creative and swap them over.

How To Empty A Nespresso Pod Into A K-Cup

It’s pretty easy. All you need to do is get your Nespresso pod and cut it open (carefully). We’ll go through it below so that you can follow a step-by-step method. It’ll be easier that way.

1. Get a K-cup and Nespresso pod
2. Get a chopping board to use
3. Set the Nespresso pod down at an incline. You need to rest the wider part of the pod on the cutting board.
4. With one hand holding the pod firmly, and the other hand holding a knife, cut off the tip of the pod. This should come away easily. If not, press harder to break the seal.
5. Remove the coffee grounds from the Nespresso pod and put them in the K-cup
6. You can now use the K-cup in the Keurig and enjoy your Nespresso coffee!

Do You Need A Machine In Order To Use Nespresso Pods?

No! You can utilize Nespresso pods without a machine – thank goodness, right? All you need to do is get a Nespresso coffee pod, cut it open, and use another method to brew the coffee grounds.

You can’t just add the coffee grounds to a cup and add boiling water – the grounds will not dissolve like instant coffee does. All you would get from drinking a coffee made like that is a mouthful of bitter grounds – no one wants that.

Instead, use a method to brew the grounds, like one of the options mentioned below:

Coffee Cone And Paper Filter

To brew coffee grounds using a coffee cone and paper filter, you will need to:

1. Put the ground coffee in the cone.
2. Put the cone in the pot.
3. Pour hot water into the pot – enough to cover the ground coffee.
4. Wait until the water cools before adding milk and sugar.
5. Once all three ingredients are added, turn the heat up high.
6. Let the coffee boil for about 3 minutes.
7. Turn the heat down low and let the coffee steep for 10 minutes.
8. After this time has passed, remove the coffee cone and pour the coffee into a cup.
9. Add milk and sugar to taste.
10. Enjoy!

French Press

To make a French press coffee, you will need to follow these steps:

1. Fill the French press with cold water
2. Place the grounds inside the French press.
3. Cover the top of the French press with a lid.
4. Allow the grounds to soak for about 15 minutes.
5. Stir the grounds every few minutes to ensure they don’t sink to the bottom of the French press.
6. Add hot water to the French press until it reaches at least 1 inch above the top of the grounds.
7. Wait until the water starts to steam.
8. Then wait for another minute or two before removing the lid.
9. Pour the coffee out into a mug.
10. Add milk and sugar if desired.
11. Enjoy!
12. Repeat as many times as you want.
13. Store any leftover coffee in an airtight container.

Use An Auto-Drip Machine

You could also try using an auto-drip machine to brew your Nespresso ground coffee. All you need to do is:

1. Make sure the machine’s water tank is full
2. Measure out how much coffee you want to make (a single serving – one Nespresso capsule makes one coffee)
3. Put the correct amount of ground coffee in the machine
4. Close the lid
5. Select “Brew”
6. Follow the instructions provided by your auto-drip machine.
